This role is primarily scheduled for standard weekday hours but may occasionally require overtime, including nights, early mornings, weekends, or holidays. Team members in this position also rotate through a 24/7 standby schedule. The current rotation structure is a two-week on-call period every six weeks, with responsibilities handled both remotely and on-site as needed.

Working under the guidance of an IT leadership role, this senior-level networking position is responsible for a wide range of duties such as:

Shaping and maintaining the network layout and security approach for the Fire Department’s mission-critical dispatch systems.

Serving as a key contact for internal staff, external partners, and vendors, with a strong focus on service quality.

Organizing and overseeing networking and infrastructure initiatives, including monitoring task execution by team members and contracted resources.

Handling advanced setup, administration, upkeep, and troubleshooting of network performance and connectivity issues.

Creating, updating, and organizing technical documentation, including diagrams, configurations, procedures, and internal reference material.

Supporting management in budget planning and long-term infrastructure investment strategies.

Ensuring all systems adhere to departmental standards and align with the broader technology roadmap.

Assessing, planning, and implementing wide-area networking needs, including work with data center-grade routing and firewall platforms.

Overseeing vendor relationships related to critical networking components and services.

Coordinating with the city’s central IT groups to ensure smooth collaboration and alignment of initiatives.

Staying informed on emerging technologies that could enhance system resilience or improve the efficiency of dispatch operations.

Taking part in meetings with internal teams, partners, and vendors as required.

Reviewing network devices and configurations to ensure compliance with policies, security expectations, and industry best practices.

Managing and maintaining all items within the ticketing and change-control system, including service requests, incidents, problems, and configuration records.
Preferred background includes:

Roughly five years of experience working on the planning, design, and ongoing support of large-scale networks.

Several years working hands-on with enterprise-level routing and switching platforms.

Experience supervising or guiding a small team of full-time staff and contractors.

Strong familiarity with routing technologies and secure remote connectivity solutions.

Professional certifications relevant to advanced networking or firewall systems.
